Overview

Rubber gaskets are a huge part of our daily life at Amarin, and we make tens of thousands of them a year. One of our longer standing customers, who uses various different sizes of our gaskets came to us with a problem. The problem was that the Nitrile rubber gaskets we had supplied for years fit a product with a screw on lid. The company had made a design change to their lids and now the rubber gaskets were meaning that the lid could now not be sufficiently tightened on their diesel holding products. This meant drips or leaks and being diesel was a real problem. If the lids could not be done up tightly enough the customer would have a huge problem selling their product with confidence.

Solution

After months of research Amarin approached a company in the United States of America who specialise in sponge rubber manufacture. Initially the company were hesitant to deal with a company in a seaside town in Somerset all the way over in England but after further negotiations a deal was reached for them to manufacture a diesel resistant sponge rubber. Being sponge this would allow a greater level of tightening by the lid due to the increased compression sponge offers over sheet rubber and being diesel resistant would solve two problems at once. This material is still being made, exclusively for Amarin, in the USA and twice a year a substantial investment is made in a fresh batch. The customer’s sales of their tanks have never been better, and they continue to grow faster than ever.
